The role of the Data Steward is complex and interacts with many different parts of the organisation and ties together many important aspects of data management. In many ways the Data Steward is at the sharp end of Data Governance, where policy meets action.

The new Data Protection regulations (GDPR) will drive a renewed focus on Data Governance.After all, GDPR is really a set of policies and data management guidelines for the uses of personal data and it requires organisations to introduce formal Data Governance arrangements.

Business Data Stewards provide an important link between policy, so often constructed in ivory towers, and the reality of implementation with end users.At the end of the day, end users are focused on their day jobs and questions of policy and governance are far from the top of their minds.Business Data Stewards come from the end user community and provide a link to the business context, bridging data governance with day to day operational work.GDPR’s focus on Privacy and Data Protection relies upon end user departments embracing the new rules not just as a one off but on an on-going basis.
