Data Warehouse Migration and the Risks

You may feel trapped by your legacy Data Warehouse solution. You have proprietary software, on premise servers and inflexible data pipelines. Costs may be high and delivered capability low.

Yet migrating to a new data platform requires significant reengineering effort and cost. Your legacy system has been in constant development for many years. The cost of replicating legacy functionality outweighs the operational benefits that could be delivered.

This does not have to be the case.

Our newly published Datavault Migration Framework provides a mechanism for an Agile, stepwise migration, running both legacy and new systems in parallel, and allowing new features to be built even while the legacy system is being transferred. This transforms the economics, tipping the business case towards the case for migration.

For example, a common requirement currently is to move a Data Warehouse into the cloud. From an outside perspective, migration projects look relatively straightforward: take the existing system and copy it onto a new platform. However as soon as we look into the details we soon find that we have to deal with cleverly designed vendor lock in, version incompatibilities, a legacy system that resembles a tar-ball, a need to have deep expertise in a raft of new skills and demand for new features, right now.

Small ‘improvements’ can have a domino effect and users are keen to shoehorn in other functionality while they have the chance.

We have produced a short e-briefing paper on the Datavault Migration Framework.

It sets out our approach to a data analytics service migration which will reduce the risks and make the project less intimidating by having a focus on:

  • Ensuring users receive continuity in the data analytics service they receive.

  • Enabling new functionality and features to be added, even during the migration project.

  • Allowing management to maintain visibility of the project, monitoring progress

  • Developing new skills right across the team maintaining team cohesion

  • Embracing Agile methods to control risk
